Amazing nature

Apr 13, 2010 -- 1:58pm

So I thought'd I'd keep you up-to-date on my veggie garden.

I really haven't started it quite yet.  I've been told it's best to wait until after May 15th...no freezing after that.  But, I have bought a few...3 to be exact.  I have Green Peppers, Yellow Peppers and Celery in little teeny tiny pots by the window.  I'm not sure how often I should water them, but I'm basically just keeping the soil moist.  So far they look pretty good.

My sister-in-law has already started hers.  She has broccoli, cabbage and something else...can't remember.  But we both have different veggies so we can share.  Plus, she has a shady garden and mine will be full sun....so it's perfect to have different veggies in that respect, too.

Outside of the veggie garden...my hubby and I have planted several shrubs and a little tree.  They're doing quite well.  In fact, the flat shrubs (have no idea what they're called) started blooming/sprouting the day after we got them in the ground.  It was really amazing to me.  I had no idea that plants could sprout that quickly.  Nature is truly amazing.

PLANTING FOOD

Mar 29, 2010 -- 4:43pm

I've decided now that I'm back home with a yard...I'm going to plant some veggies!  Talk about saving money and staying away from pesticides!!  I love both of those! =)

Went to the cultural center garden show this past weekend and bought my first few bit of veggies.  So far I have peppers and celery.  I've never grown either...so it should be quite interesting.  I also want to plant tomatoes and leaf lettuce.  If you have any suggestions of what else would be good to plant...let me know.

Jenny Murray will be helping me a little.  She has a very mature green thumb, whereas mine is just beginning to grow.  I know for sure she grows her own tomatoes and makes her own salsa...speaking of which, have you tried her salsa!?!?  I personally think she should market it.  It's delishhhhh! hmmmmm...maybe it could be the V100 salsa??  I like it.

Let's graze

Mar 02, 2010 -- 12:59pm

Ric Cochran brought the term up a few weeks ago when he saw me munching on some almonds.  He said, "we should always graze throughout  the day."  You know what??  He's right, well, at least according to Health magazine.  That's another one of my fav magazines.

Yep...Health mag says by 'grazing' or munching on food all day...and not a lot, but just a few good, healthy snacks in-between meals keeps our blood sugar from going all over the place and in turn ... we'll feel better and have more energy.

I bring this up because I'm munching now...not on anything healthy though, which is rare for me.  I brought a big salad with broccoli and some strawberries on the side for lunch and less than 2 hours later....I hear the tummy growling.  I do have a high metablolism, but still...sheesh.  So with no 'go-to' healthy snacks at my desk, I had to revert to the evil snack machine.  Peanut Butter crackers is the only thing that is even close to healthy in there....even though there's still unbleaced flour and a ton words that I cannot pronounce.  I don't like eating anything I can't pronounce....but I had to ease the growl.

So what's my point to this??  Well...number one, always have healthy -go-to- snacks at your desk or cubicle....and second, go ahead and graze....it's good for you.  In fact, let's graze together =)  What are some of your fav foods to graze on??

Don't Litter. It's not pretty and it's gross.

Feb 22, 2010 -- 4:27pm

Played lots of frisbee on Sunday with my hubby.  What a beautiful day and how wonderful to see a few folks out enjoying not only the weather, but some of Charlestons great outdoor spots...like Coonskin, Magic Island, the sidewalk along the Kanawha....what I didn't like seeing was the litter!  Oh my gosh.  I couldn't believe how much there was.

Why would someone finishing their latte decide to just drop the cup on the ground, or tos it out a car window or just not use a trash can.  If anything, we should be looking for the closest recycling place.  My husband and I do that...we have seperate bins for glass, plastic, cardboard and then just trash.  We're also going to begin composting this spring so we'll save some landfills and also have great mulch for my spring garden...that I"m ready to begin planting now. =)

Well...there's a bit of soap box for you today.

It's Still Snowing!

Feb 16, 2010 -- 9:42am

I know ... I haven't blogged in quite awhile.  I got busy during the holidays here at V100 and well ... I guess I thought it was still the holidays because, IT'S STILL SNOWING!  lol

I moved back home in hopes that it would be warmer, sunnier and less snowy.  Not so much.  These past 2 weeks...maybe even 3 have been nothing but Anchorage weather.  If it keeps this up next month I'll think I'm living in some weird universe that Charleston is now Anchorage.

Of course it is warmer.  I have to give it that.  No negative temperatures on a continuous basis...so that's good.

Outside of weather ... there's a lot going on here at V100.  Anyone fans of the Wizard of Oz?  I know I am.  It's still one of my all-time favorite movies.  Coming in April, you'll be able to see it on the stage over at the Clay Center.   I'm looking forward to that ... especially just to see how they'll get the continuous yellow brick road on one stage...should be interesting.  =)  I'll also have tickets to giveaway beginning in late March...so brush up on your Wizard of Oz trivia.

Stay warm and don't slip on the snow ... and hopefully it will begin to melt ... probably not by tomorrow...but that's when I'll check back in with you.  Have a wonderful day!

Sunday Pancakes

Nov 04, 2009 -- 4:46pm

I love pancakes...especially on Sunday.  I think because growing up my dad, who was the pancake maker, always picked Sundays to do the pancake breakfast.

So that's what my husband and I did this past Sunday.  My husband has actually taken over my dad's role of being the pancake maker, except for this past Sunday.  I thought I'd give it a whirl.  They actually turned out really well...well, good, but a little lopsided and different sizes...but they tasted great!

I can never get the size right.  No matter how hard I try to pour just the right amount the cakes come out in many different sizes ... and shapes.

I was just reading a great article in 'Real Simple' magazine about new uses for older items.  I'm going to try this...maybe even this Sunday:  take your old ketchup bottle (and clean it out, of course) and reuse it to squirt out the pancake batter!!  That's genius!!

I'll let you know how they turn out!  =)
